How to stop self destructive behavior — the first step

© Daryl Cauchi

Recently, I talked about why we self-destruct. It’s because we want to feel good.

When our lifestyles make us feel bad, we habitually turn to the quick fix. This fuels a never ending downward spiral of self destructive behavior that’s hard to stop…

One day you find life has gone pear-shaped, you’re not functioning, not coping.

And you know… big steps don’t work because by the time you’re not coping, you NEED that fix to even function…

The BIG STUFF of health and happiness

Woman holding arms out wide.

It’s so easy to get bogged down in the details of health and neglect the BIG STUFF. But the big stuff is where your attention needs to be — checking health boxes every single day.

There are six key lifestyle elements — six health boxes for you to check every day by developing good habits… With our busy lives this is a big enough job on its own without getting distracted…

One of the biggest mindset ideas you need

In my 20 year search for health and happiness I wasted a lot of time researching the fine details of this and that.

I studied all the little biochemical effects, promising remedies, the debates and so on… desperately trying to get a handle on everything and how it all interacts…

It slowly but surely dawned on me… it’s an IMPOSSIBLE task.

Your body is probably the most complex thing that exists. It’s magnificent and wonderful. When you really consider it, it’s just AWESOME. Just have a look at one of those tiny hairs on your arm… really LOOK. Doesn’t it fill you with wonder?

The TRUTH is that even the greatest minds know NOTHING about your wonderful body. Even the greatest minds can only hold a little part of how it works. And humanity as a whole has only uncovered the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how your body works…

Why we self-destruct and how to stop

© Glendali

In short, we self-destruct because we want to feel good.

It seems a very strange thing to say but wanting to feel good is behind self destructive behavior. Feeling good is natural to us and when we don’t feel good we will do whatever it takes to feel good again.

The problem is that the quick fix we choose makes us feel even worse after the short-term high. It’s dysfunctional because it doesn’t work. Self destructive behavior only makes things worse but it’s the way we’re wired…

In nature we couldn’t fall into this trap. There are no pizza trees, no ice-cream or chocolate trees.

There are no rivers of vodka :-) Continue reading “Why we self-destruct and how to stop”

Prevention is better than cure

Not only is nearly all chronic illness created by poor lifestyle but medicine cannot cure chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, arthritis, depression, obesity, heart disease, diabetes or cancer.

Modern medicine is based on drugs, surgery and the “pill for an ill” mentality…

It’s quite astounding when you think about the massive human resources we put into “health care” that to put it quite bluntly — doesn’t work! For trauma, acute conditions and inherited conditions, the approach can be amazing. But for chronic conditions i.e. most problems, drugs and surgery don’t cure anything…

How could they? The problems aren’t caused by lack of drugs and so cannot be solved by adding drugs. A true cure is only possible by removing the original cause and providing the ideal conditions for the body to heal itself… Continue reading “Prevention is better than cure”

Can dehydration cause dizziness?

© Ivan Dervisevic

I just got back from taking my father to the doctor.

He’s in his later years now and unfortunately hasn’t lived the healthiest of lifestyles.

Amongst other things, he’s been having trouble with his hearing and dizziness. A few specialists later and no-one seems any the wiser…

His doctor today recommended he try a new clinic that was setup for people with “non-specific” complaints. The doctor told me this new clinic is causing a bit of a stir… Continue reading “Can dehydration cause dizziness?”

What to do when you’re not happy with your life

© Dhammza

It can be so hard to figure out what to do when you’re not happy with your life — to get to the TRUE causes, the REAL reasons.

Maybe you arrived here with a specific health-related problem you’d like to solve.

Perhaps you’re overweight, suffering from depression or struggling for energy…

Or maybe you just feel generally dissatisfied, that you’re not getting the best out of life? Have you ever asked yourself…

“What am I doing wrong? What’s wrong with me? I just want to be happy. When did it get so HARD?”

Take action

Getting Happy Guide off the ground is not unlike your health and happiness.

We take steps, we fall, we try again, we crawl for a bit, perhaps even bum shuffle :-) We refocus and try again.

And after a couple of years of falling on our a**, it finally seems we’re standing up. A bit wobbly but hey, we did it!

Just the same really.

So don’t be scared to take action. That’s how you learn…

It’s ironic that it’s often the most intelligent people who are scared to act. There are some folks who just don’t think too far ahead and they don’t see problems — they just do their thing. In my experience, they tend to be happier and sometimes more successful… Continue reading “Take action”

Quantum leap or baby steps?

Baby steps, small changes
© Bill G

Sometimes it’s better to take a quantum leap (big change) and sometimes baby steps.

99% of the time though, baby steps are better.

That’s because your ability to follow through depends on your level of commitment.

Thinking about where you are right now — how committed are you? How much “backlash” are you willing to take?

If the answer to that is “not much” then baby steps are the way to go. If there’s no urgency to change, baby steps can still take you to a happy and healthy place, with very little in the way of discomfort.

It amazes me how time flies — the weeks go by quickly! If you make a little change each week then it soon mounts up… Continue reading “Quantum leap or baby steps?”
