Goji juice and goji berry mania is rife. But is this humble berry the fountain of youth — a “miracle food” as is claimed?
Can it really prevent cancer? Or is it just another case of food fashion meets marketing?
Let’s find out…
Goji facts
Goji Berries, apparently, are “fruit Viagra,” “one pack will have you jumping for joy” and they’re “cellulite-busting,” according to the marketing hype. Hmmm (muses).
Goji berries — pronounced “go-gee” are about the same size as raisins but red and somewhat harder. They’re also known as wolfberries and grow on vines native to the Himalayas. They’re also grown extensively in China, Mongolia, and Tibet… Continue reading “The great goji juice controversy”→
We are suffering greatly under the weight of poor nutrition and lifestyle choices.
66% of Americans are overweight. And about half of these are obese…
Add to that the suffering caused by depression, cancer, heart disease, strokes and a multitude of other preventable diseases and the picture is very grim.
Carla asks a very important and interesting question…
“Thanks for the updates… I love the reminder to check in! And you always have something interesting goin’ on… I’ve been meaning to enquire about an issue and wondered if you’d do a write up about it as I’ve not found anything definitive yet.
OK, it’s the B12 issue… we all know that spirulina and other green algae have B12 analogues in them that are NOT readily absorbed. My question is, do they interfere with the absorption of regular ol’ B12?! Some say yes, do not ingest them… others are naysayers and say they have synergistic benefits. It’s really confusing and I would like to know your take on this! Thanks… hope that makes sense :-) Have a great weekend!”
OK, in case you think that second paragraph is written in a foreign language… it’s not :-)
Non-vegans are probably not going to have a clue what this question actually means. So a bit of background information to start…
Those making an ethical choice — vegans and vegetarians naturally want to get all their nutrition needs from food, without needing to take supplements. In part, this is because they want to justify their choices.
If they have to resort to supplements then it suggests something is wrong with the diet. They want their choices to have a sound rational basis, and who can blame them? Continue reading “Vitamin B12 analogues and deficiency”→
It’s pretty hard to work out what you can and can’t eat these days…
Which is not a good situation given the alarming rise of obesity and chronic illness in the US and UK.
Can eating like an ape improve your health?
Can natural nutrition reverse the effects of modern diets?
The BBC decided to find out and got some volunteers to go “back to nature”…
The “Evo Diet” experiment
Take one zoo enclosure in Devon, England — only meters away from the great apes. Put in some huts and tents. Add 9 people with dangerously high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Add a dietician prepared ape diet and then simmer for 12 days… Continue reading “The truth about food — how to eat like an ape”→
Wouldn’t it be great if we had some really healthy role models?
People who live the healthiest, happiest lives so that we can look at them with soft focus and say “I want to be like that too?”
Well we can! There are lists of the healthiest nations in the world…
Japan usually tops these lists but actually, above Japan is the little island of Okinawa. It’s only a teeny dot on the world map…
The healthiest people in the world?
Okinawa is a lush subtropical island in the Pacific Ocean, made famous — at least in my mind — as the home of Mr. Myagi in The Karate Kid :-)
It has more people over a hundred years old than anywhere else on Earth — as a percentage of the population. Well, no-one wants to live to be a centenarian if the last thirty years of their life is spent in miserable declining health…
Is it really wrong to eat meat? My mind often dwells on this issue and I wanted to share some thoughts I’ve been having.
The Native American Indians were extremely spiritual people and there are writings that show just how much…
Beautiful poems about the “great spirits” and the wonder of nature. In the movie The Last of the Mohicans we see the killing of a deer and the great honour, respect and thanks given to the creature and sadness that it was necessary for survival…
Ever had a hangover from eating a big pizza? The reason for it may lie with the humble grain.
Many doctors are now speaking out against “the staff of life” and research is mounting which will hopefully dislodge the grain as the staple food of humans…
Opioids
Makes you think of the Chinese opium dens and extract of poppies doesn’t it?
